Hello digi-cnx Community,

As Digi CNX turns one year old, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your participation in the meetups this past year. We set out with an intention to bring together the many different communities of Chiang Mai and we’re proud that we have been able to do this. About 2/3 of our community is from civil society, academia, and industry, with interests in law and policy, digital nomadism, digital rights, crypto, and media. We are excited about the community that is starting to take shape, thanks to the involvement of the people participating.

We’ve been busy over the past few months and have a few updates and announcements to share.

If you are receiving the email in your inbox it’s because you registered for one of our events in Chiang Mai. As part of our effort to keep you informed, this newsletter, alongside our social media channels, will announce upcoming events and updates. We promise to value the sanctity of your inbox and limit our sending to event invites and quarterly updates.

If you prefer not to receive these communications, please let us know by replying to this email, and we’ll remove you from the mailing list.

1. Our Name, Mission, and Logo

digiCNX – network for digital commons

digi-cnx is a local Chiang Mai network committed to dialogue and research on how digital technologies are impacting people and our planet.

Our mission is to share knowledge and encourage collaborative learning by connecting people of different backgrounds and fields, driven by a desire to understand and impact how digital technologies are changing our world.

We believe in actively and intentionally shaping digital spaces that prioritize openness, social benefit, ecological balance, and human agency.

Since we launched as ‘digix – center for digital futures’ in 2023 we maintained that everything was in beta, open to being shaped by activities and the community.

CNX

CNX grounds our identity to Chiang Mai, while the ‘x’ expresses our interest in the infinite intersections with digital technology.

Network

Network reflects our organizational structure, open and distributed, with many centers formed by shared interests, passions, and collaboration among people within the community.

Digital Commons

Digital commons reflects the form of digital spaces that we care about- one that prioritizes openness, social benefit, ecological balance, and human agency.

2. Digital Presence

We’ve Launched Our Website!

Visit our new website at digicnx.network to see our vision and the impact we’re working toward. It’s a significant step towards giving our collective efforts a solid presence and credibility.

So far we have maintained a very light digital presence: an invite-only Signal group. Signal remains our primary digital space for our community to live and share due to its standing as the only non-profit messaging app with a privacy focussed mission. We acknowledge, however, that large social media platforms and communication channels are important for us to broaden our reach.

  • We’ve setup a Facebook page and a LinkedIn page to share public invites and announcements. We invite you to follow the pages on the platforms you are most comfortable with. Your follows of the pages and shares of events will help us spread the word about events and grow our community.
  • We launched a newsletter as a way for us to share updates and keep our community up to date. We promise to value the sanctity of your inbox and limit our sending to event invites and quarterly updates.

3. Funding

We are a volunteer-run network. In 2023 we received a small financial contribution in the form of a Road to Devcon grant from the Ethereum Foundation, which allows us to cover basic costs related to things like events and domain fees.

4. Introducing Our Community Resource Library

This is a living collection of resources, research, and media, etc., shared by guest speakers and community members at our meetups and in the Signal group.

5. Meet-ups

Upcoming We’re planning several exciting meet-ups for this year. One that is already confirmed for June 5 is “The Rise of Global Creator and ‘Wang Hong’ Culture” with David Craig. Stay tuned for more details on this and other events planned for the coming months.

6. Get Involved With the Network – Your Ideas and Participation

We began with meet-ups, but there are countless ways this mission can unfold. If you have ideas or projects that align with our mission, we encourage you to reach out. There’s potential for support and funding for projects that contribute to our mission.

As part of our effort to keep you informed, this newsletter, alongside our social media channels, will announce upcoming events and updates. If you prefer not to receive these communications, please let us know by replying to this email, and we’ll remove you from the mailing list.

Know someone in Chiang Mai who’d be interested in joining our community? Invite them to visit our website and sign up.
