Hello digi-cnx Community,
As you all are intimately aware, Chiang Mai is a well-recognized global hub for digital nomads and remote work professionals. In our experience we see a unique mix of people with connections to leading institutions and global projects pushing the paradigm on important contemporary challenges from digital to climate. In October, several Web3 global communities will converge in Chiang Mai for “pop-up cities” that will bring innovative and thoughtful change-makers with interests in topics such as climate, AI, art, regeneration, etc. With more relaxed visa policies and a new ‘digital traveler visa,’ the city may see an influx of more digital nomads staying for longer periods of time.
This brings many exciting opportunities for collaboration and socio-economic benefits. However, these trends are not without risks and challenges to the local ecology, community, and economic balance.
Going into the next few months digi-cnx is planning workshops and other programs under the theme ‘Cosmolocal Chiang Mai’ to facilitate connections between global and local communities to create meaningful interactions that bridge global and local perspectives. We will be planning this with several local and global collaborators.
We have two cosmolocal projects currently listed in the GG21 Asia Round curated by two leading communities in Asia – GCC & Pagoda, designed to unlock the potential of talented Asian innovators, builders, and projects by providing them with essential funding and resources. If you have the interest and the means we invite you to contribute, however small, which can help us raise funds for community activities.

The Rise of Global Creator and “Wang Hong” Culture
For those who missed it, our recent event featured a fascinating presentation by Professor David Craig. The session provided a detailed exploration of the evolving landscape of online creators and “Wang Hong” culture.
Drawing on a decade of research, Professor Craig and his coauthor connected with 500 individuals across 10 countries and 25 cities. They explored the rapid growth of this new industry, distinct from traditional media and film, driven by emerging technologies and social media platforms.
The presentation highlighted the key differences between streaming services and social media platforms, focusing on how creators build and monetize online communities. Professor Craig also discussed various challenges faced by creators, such as issues with platform policies, the impact of generative AI, and the rise of creator labor rights movements. Additionally, he compared creator cultures between Western and Chinese platforms, featuring notable figures like Mr. Beast and China’s Viya.
