Planetary thinking (and ecology at large) relating to questions around Climate Change, species extinction, and other such global challenges, is impossible without the cosmic perspective. How might silicon-based computing move into bio-computing with DNA-based storage, a radical evolution from our current paradigm.
digi-cnx: network for digital commons welcomes you to a talk with Lukáš Likavčan, a philosopher focused on emerging technologies, ecology, and astronomy, currently a researcher at the Antikythera program at the Berggruen Institute, and based in Chiang Mai for a brief period.
The presentation is based on Lukáš’ on-going work concerning the environmental consequences of exoplanet astronomy, astrobiology, SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), and cosmology.
Thursday 10 July
5:00 p.m. @ 4Seas Nimman
100 THB (optional)
The talk will cycle through three intertwined reflections:
- Fermi paradox and its solutions framed within the famous Drake equation—a formula used to estimate the number of radio-commuting extraterrestrial communities in our galaxy—the second reflection will have a closer look at the
- problems of distinguishing life from intelligence on the cosmic scale, culminating in the suggestion originally claimed by sci-fi author Karl Schröder that “any sufficiently advanced technology may be indistinguishable from nature.”
- philosophical legacies of East Asian Mahāyāna Buddhism, especially Kyōto School and Chinese New Confucians, and their relevance in cosmology of dark matter and substrate-agnostic ecological thinking.
digi-cnx is a local Chiang Mai network committed to dialogue and research on how digital technologies are impacting both people and our planet. This talk is part of our speaker series featuring local and visiting researchers.
100 THB is the suggested fees for this talk shared between the speaker and organisers to keep this community sustainable. However You may choose to attend at no cost no questions asked. All talks are open free charge for students.
