Hello digi-cnx Community,

Chiang Mai will be a major hub of community activity and learning this October. Many communities connected to crypto/web3 are planning “pop-up villages” – a relatively new phenomenon where hundreds of people from around the world spend up to a month together as part of shared residencies and community events. This will be a unique time when many people at the bleeding edge of digital tech and regeneration and climate, indigenous wisdom, encryption and digital sovereignty, community governance, among other interesting themes of our time, will be in town and we’re excited to co-create.

During this period digi-cnx intends to help some of these communities connect more meaningfully with local networks and organisation and create spaces that bring together people with different backgrounds ( beyond just Web3 and crypto) to learn and connect. We hold a long term view towards growing the Chiang Mai commons oriented around openness, ecological balance and social benefit.

To help keep our community informed and involved, we’ve set up a landing page featuring the pop-up villages and programs oriented around learning and education. As plans continue to evolve, this will be your go-to place for updates and opportunities to participate.

For more real-time updates we suggest connecting with us on Twitter or LinkedIn.

Digital Humanities Un-College

We’re especially excited to be working with Sam Chua on a Digital Humanities Un-College, creating an open platform for IRL community liberal arts learning focused on tech and society. The Un-College is still in development, and more details are still being added to the web page, but we are excited about creating a unique opportunity for real-world learning and collaboration.

Cosmo-local Chiang Mai Future(s) Workshop

On September 8, we hosted a 1-day workshop at 4Seas Mountain View bringing together 26 leaders and change makers from Chiang Mai and Thai organizations, pop-up villages, and digital nomad communities. Through the ‘cosmo-local’ framing we set to imagine future(s) for Chiang Mai where digital nomad communities and #Web3 pop-up villages are better connected to local communities & issues. We explored how can Chiang Mai meaningfully benefit from the knowledge and resources networks of digital nomads and remote workers, and how Chiang Mai’s local communities and knowledge systems can help shape global discourse and developments. It was an inspiring day filled with meaningful conversations about how we, as nomads and expats, can contribute positively to the local community and environment. The workshop was facilitated by Shakil Ahmed, a Futurist and educator, introducing Futures thinking methodologies to help bring more intention and imagination to our visions of the future and how we can be more intentional with our actions. The workshop was co-organised by Dev Lewis and Vivian Chen, and made possible thanks to support from 4Seas, and grants raised from the Gitcoin Asia Round and EF Devcon’s CLR Round. We are also grateful to support from the School of Public Policy at CMU for support. The event was a fantastic opportunity for networking and relationship building, with participants exchanging ideas on how to create a more supportive and sustainable ecosystem for both locals and global visitors. We’re proud to have facilitated this space where these important connections were made. More news and developments around Cosmo-local Chiang Mai will be shared soon.

Cosmo-local Future(s) at APFN Bangkok

We took our show south to the 10th annual Asia Pacific Futures Network (APFN) conference in Bangkok co-organised by School of Public Policy, Chiang Mai University. This year’s theme was ‘authentic futures- crafting conscious pathways’ and we shared our emerging ‘cosmo-local’ vision for Chiang Mai.

Get Involved

Volunteer: With an abundance of activities happening, there are also many areas we would love support. If you’re interested in social media, photography, writing, event organisation, or have ideas you would like to bring to the table we would like to hear from you. If you have any suggestions or want to play a bigger role in planning events or organizing, please let us know. digi-cnx is a community-driven effort. It’s exciting to see what it can become and the impact we can make—not just on each other, but on both the digital and physical aspects of this corner of Southeast Asia.
